Step into a realm where art, music, and nature intertwine in this experimental short film, shot entirely on VHS with deliberate generation loss, as it takes you on a journey of exploration and introspection.

Inspired by the enigmatic specimen ZRC_1_3200:3203 at the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum, the film delves into the recursive nature of memory and meaning-making. Abstract realities unfold through observation, dialogue, and human interaction, unearthing deeper dimensions within the worlds of artist-jeweller Shing of Argentum, taxonomist Dr Tan Swee Hee of Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum and conductor Jason Lai of Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music.

When I first encountered ZRC_1_3200:3203 (a frog, eggs blooming out of her dead body, preserved in ethanol and on display at the LKCNHM), I was captivated. She encapsulated an entire life cycle at once: birth, life, and death, the most inescapable and universal timeline across all things.

Equally captivating was the LKCNHM itself and their efforts to preserve these dead specimens, their whole raison d’etre being the hope that someone will eventually uncover some great truth about the life that was lived.

A scientist holding death in the image of life, certain that this endeavour will yield important knowledge for others in the future. An orchestra rebirthing a piece of music, guided by the communion of a long dead composer and a living conductor.

An artist processing grief through love and remembrance, in a tribute to a life that was once shared. A film, a transient meeting point, for a story that is written both by filmmaker and audience.

All in the spirit of connecting, co-creating, and building meaning upon meaning, which, to me, is one of the most life-affirming expressions of the human condition.
