If you've been following Singaporean theatre news recently, you'll know that a few shows from SIFA 2015 won prizes at this year's Life! Theatre Awards. Specifically, Ong Keng Sen's The Incredible Adventures of Border Crosserswon Best Multimedia Design (Brian Gothong Tan) and Best Costume Design (Reckless Ericka); while W!ld Rice's Hotel won Production of the Year, Best Director (Glen Goei and Ivan Heng), Best Original Script (Alfian Sa'at and Marcia Vanderstraaten) and Best Ensemble.
And if you didn't catch Hotel last year, don't fret—the show's coming back! It's playing as part of the Singapore Theatre Festival from 30 June to 24 July 2016. Early Bird discounts of up to 25% are still available until 11 May.
In other festival news, a few young indie theatremakers are putting up The Twenty-Something Theatre Festival from 9 to 19 June. It's exactly what it sounds like: semi-established folks in their twenties trying to create a platform for other young playwrights, actors and directors. Tickets are cheap and creators are passionate. What's not to like?
Well, there is a downside for us—fact is, there's a kind of a conflict between these shows and The OPEN, which runs from 22 June to 9 July. The Twenty-Something Fest doesn't clash directly, but it's the two weekends before, and there's a pretty big overlap between our programs and the Theatre Festival's.
And of course, there's little ol' me, who's trying to provide coverage of all three festivals. (I review theatre for The Straits Times and The Online Citizen too.)
Crazy days ahead!
