Originating in Church rituals associated with Good Friday that required the singing of the Gospels by a group of individuals, The Passion which relives the last hours of the life of Christ, soon grew to encompass and entire genre of music. Today, they are best known through the Passions according to John and Matthew, set to music by J S Bach but the history of Passion plays set to music is rich and varied and spans some of the earliest traditions of Western music and contemporary works inspired by them. Join Singaporean composer Hoh Chung Shih as he takes audiences on a journey through the Passions in Western art music, exploring both the popular and lesser-known versions of this important tradition.
