A crisis often become a crucible for innovation. This year marks a tremendously unusual year for me as Festival Director of the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA), where we found ourselves having to curate an entire festival in real-time.
Much like the rest of the world which found itself in unchartered waters, SIFA was challenged to create a six-month virtual festival from June to December 2020 – to keep you, our audience, engaged and to continue to generate work opportunities for our Singaporean artists.
As we near the end of 2020, I'm incredibly proud of the entire SIFA team and Arts House Limited for rising to the challenge of producing SIFA v2.020 – our digital platform which presented a diverse series of performances, talks, vodcasts and film screenings - that has played it big part in helping keep the arts alive.
I am also proud of our directors, producers, performers and free-lance arts practitioners who have shown tremendous resilience and creativity in finding exciting and innovative ways to tell their stories through a digital platform.
As theatres started to open up in November, it was a fabulous finale for SIFA v2.020 to be able to convert some of our online programmes into live experiences for you to enjoy. Watching the joyous expressions on the faces of our audience as they walked out of the theatre at the end of what was probably their first live performance in eight months made all the hard work worth it.
While nobody knows how the course of 2021 will run, I am hopeful that we will be able to present SIFA 2021 to you from May 14-30 as planned. The team and I have curated an incredible line-up of shows that incorporate both live and virtual performances. We aim to unveil the programme at the beginning of next year, so please follow SIFA's social media channels to book your tickets as soon as they go on sale. With limited seating capacities, they will sell out quickly.
Thank you for supporting SIFA v2.020, for supporting our artists and for taking this journey with us as we walk new paths. Have a wonderful happy new year!
