Message from Chairman

It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA) 2023. A festival is a space where some people gather to immerse and engage in works of creativity and imagination. It is in this spirit that SIFA 2023 presents a range of works that compel us to contemplate our diversity and uniqueness as people existing in common spaces together.

Wilson Tan

This edition’s title SIFA 2023 The Anatomy of Performance: Some People engages with the idea that the human experience exists on a spectrum. We are the sum of all the narratives that chapter and alter our lives; each trial and transformation, what our ancestors and communities have had to struggle through, our experiences as children and adults, things inherited and circumstances imposed on our lives shape how we move through life and experience the world.

Message from Toshiki Okada

Theater is an art form enabling the existence of things that do not actually exist in the performance space, on the level of the imagination. As such, in theater, we can create illusions. The illusions in theater can sometimes have a solidity which would permit us to say that the subject actually exists there. This is because they are experienced in common by all of the people in attendance at the performance.

In recent years, we members of chelfitsch have been working on EIZO-Theater, a distinctive style of theater. In it, the space of the performance is that where actual-size images of performances by actors are projected. Illusions appear in this performance space, through the projected images.

What appears in the projected images is an illusion, in the sense that it is not really present in the performance space where its image is projected. Nevertheless, this is not the whole story of illusions in EIZO-Theater; the theatrical illusion born of the acting by the actors in the projected images - that is, the illusion generated by an illusion - is an illusion created by EIZO-Theater.

Through my practice of EIZO-Theater thus far, I am now able to say with confidence that I have absolutely no confidence in my ability to accurately distinguish what is reality and what is illusion in this world. Perhaps you, too, will feel this way if you experience NEW-ILLUSION, the latest work of EIZO-Theater at this point in time.

About EIZO-Theatre

About EIZO-Theatre

EIZO-Theater is a new type of theater that Toshiki Okada has begun to develop in recent years together with Shimpei Yamada, a stage and video designer. It is an attempt to transform display space into theatrical space by the effects that projected images have on human sensibility.

In EIZO-Theater, Okada has discerned enormous possibilities for expanding the latent potential of the very medium of theater.

Operating on a level beyond that of technique and form, EIZO-Theater theatrically grasps the characteristics inducing sensory experience, such as the way audiences stare at human beings (actors) in the video images and the peculiar presence that their projected images possess. For example, the quality of the experience of staring at a body differs greatly depending on whether the body is a real one before the eyes or a projected image of one. Among the formal attributes of theater, some are used to better advantage and brought out more by the medium of video. Okada is using these effects to create video-based theater. As of the present, this type of theater is called "EIZO-Theater."
