Tang Xianzu: The Dreams Continue

Dr Chua Soo Ping (Singapore)

Tang Xianzu (1550 – 1616) wrote his great plays during the late Ming dynasty, while halfway around the world, William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) lived and worked in roughly the same time period. Like Shakespeare, Tang’s plays continue to be performed, not just in Kun opera styles, but also in different genres of Chinese opera, from Cantonese opera, Teochew opera to Hokkien opera in China and Singapore.

Join Dr Chua Soo Ping, an ethnomusicologist, playwright, director and choreographer, in this insightful talk discussing the diverse contemporary interpretations of Tang’s landmark four plays based on dreams – The Handan Dream, A Dream Under the Southern Bough, The Purple Hairpin and The Peony Pavilion – through these forms of Chinese opera, dance drama and other art forms.
